SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the said corpora-
tion shall have power to take and hold real and per-
sonal property, also devises or bequests of any person
or persons, bodies corporate or politic, capable of mak-
ing the same, and the same, at their pleasure, to trans-
fer or dispose of in such manner as they may think

proper; provided, that the said body politic or corpo-
rate, shall not, at any one time, hold or possess pro-
perty, real, personal, or mixed, exceeding in value
the sum of twenty thousand dollars, which property
shall descend to their successors, to be applied to the
relief of the sick and distressed members of said cor-
poration, the education of the children, and the relief
of the widows of deceased members, and for the pro-
motion of these objects generally.

Proviso.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the corporation
aforesaid shall have power to alter and amend the

bye-laws thereof at pleasure; provided, that such al-
terations and amendment do not, in any way, conflict
with the laws of the United States, the laws of the
State of Maryland, or the laws of the Grand Division
of the Sons of Temperance, of the State of Mary-
land.

Proviso.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the said corpora-
tion shall not be allowed to issue any note, token,
device, scrip, or other evidence of debt to be used as
a currency.

Banking forbid.

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That this act of incor-
poration shall enure for thirty years from the passage
hereof, and that the Legislature reserves to itself the
right to alter and amend the same at pleasure.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the Levy Court of Frederick county, be and

they are hereby authorised and directed, at the time
of making their next annual levy for said county, and
annually thereafter, if necessary, in levy on the as-
