their capital, or funds in the purchase of suitable furni-
ture and other personal effects, for the use of their said
hall, or other apartments and premises, to be held and
enjoyed by them as their other corporate property.

SEC. 12. And be it further enacted, That nothing
herein contained, either by name or otherwise, shall be
so construed as to exempt said company, incorporated
by this act, from taxation; and that nothing herein con-
tained shall be so construed as to authorise or empower
said corporation to issue any note, certificate, token or
evidence of debt, to be used as currency; and the right
is hereby expressly reserved to the General Assembly of
Maryland at its pleasure, to niter, amend or annul this
act of incorporation.

An act to reduce the number of Justices of the Peace,
in and for the City of Baltimore, to change the mode
of compensating them, find for other purposes.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That from and after the passage of this act,
the Governor be, and he is hereby directed, by and with
the advice and consent of the Senate, in place of the
thirty-six justices of the peace now authorised by law
to be appointed and commissioned in and lor the city of
Baltimore, to appoint and commission sixteen persons,
citizens of the United States, and bona fide residents of
said city, to be styled and called justices of the peace
of the State of Maryland, in and for the city of Bal-
timore.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the said justices of
the peace, after qualifying as hereinafter provided, shall
have and exercise all and singular the jurisdiction, powers
and authority, and perform all and every the several du-
ties now belonging or assigned to justices of the peace
in and for the city of Baltimore.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the said justices of
the peace shall hold their commissions for two years from
the date thereof, unless sooner removed, and before any
of the said justices shall be qualified to act as such, he
shall first make the oath or affirmation now prescribed
for justices of the peace of this Slate, and shall make
and execute to the State of Maryland, and file in the of-
