CHAPTER 5.

An act to allow William O. Chappell, former sheriff
and collector of Montgomery County, further time to
complete his collections.

Extension of
time granted.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That William O. Chappell, former sheriff and collector
of Montgomery county, shall be and he is hereby allowed
until the first day of December eighteen hundred and
forty-eight, to complete the collection of all fees and
taxes due him as sheriff and collector as aforesaid, in
the same manner as he might have done whilst in office,
provided, that the authority hereby given shall not ex-
tend to any person or persons of whom any such fees
or taxes may be claimed, who shall make oath or affir-
nation before a justice of the peace, that the fees or

taxes so claimed have been paid or satisfied.

An act for the relief of Lott Gaither, of Frederick
County.

Preamble.

WHEREAS, it has been represented to this General
Assembly, that Lott Gaither, of Frederick county, is
now confined in the jail of said county, because of his
inability to give the security required by law for the
maintenance of an illegitimate child charged to be his

custody.

Proviso.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the sheriff of Frederick county be,
and he is hereby authorised, empowered and directed,
to discharge from his custody, Lott Gaither, charged
with being the father of an illegitimate child; provided,
he is not in custody for any other offence, nor on any
civil process.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall go into
effect from and after its passage.
