1846.

SEC. 7. And be it enacted, That the vole of two-thirds
of the whole board of directors, exclusive of the presi-
dent, shall be necessary to adopt the constitution and
by-laws of the said society; and all amendments or al-
terations of the constitution aad by-laws shall be made
at a general meeting of the members of the society,
convened in pursuance of public notice, given as in cases
for annual elections for directors, when each member
present shall have one vote, and a vote of two-thirds of
the members present shall be necessary to make any al-
teration or amendment to the constitution or by-laws,
and when thus amended, shall be binding on all the mem-
bers of the society.

CHAP. 356.

SEC. 8. And be it enacted, That it shall be the duty
of the president, whenever required by two-thirds of the
whole directors, or by any number of the members of
the society, not less than twenty, to call a general meet-
ing of the society, and any resolutions adopted at such
meeting by a vole of not less than two-thirds of the
members present shall be binding on the president and
directors of said society.

SEC. 9. And be it enacted, That whenever any mem-
ber of the said society shall lose any slave or slaves, by
the absconding of such slave or slaves from his service,
it shrill be the duly of such member, without delay, to
notify the president or secretary of said society of the
fact, under oath, and at once to execute to the said so-
ciety a bill of sale or transfer, in writing, of such ab-
sconding slave or slaves, and it shall he the duty of the
directors, at their next meeting after they shall have
been notified of such loss, to cause an accurate statement
to be made of the proportion or sum to be contributed
by each member to make good the amount to be paid to
the person or persons having sustained the said loss, nnd
to notify the members of the society of the same; and if,
after the expiration of sixty days from the date of such
notice, any member of the said society shall have failed
to pay his contribution aforesaid, it shall be lawful for
the said president and directors to enforce the collection
of the same in the manner hereinafter provided for.

SEC. 10. And be it enacted, That it shall and may be
lawful for the president and directors of said society to
cause steps to be taken to secure, capture and retake any
and all absconding or runaway slaves of any member of
said society, or the slave or slaves which may have ab-
sconded or runaway, and afterwards by the owner or own-
ers thereof have been transferred to the said society, and
