person or persons, bodies, corporate or politic, capable
of making the same, and the same at their pleasure to
transfer or dispose of in such manner as they may think
proper; provided, always, that the said corporation or
body politic, shall not at any time hold or possess pro-
perty, real, personal or mixed, exceeding in value the

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That it shall and may be
lawful for the said corporation to have a common seal for
their use, and the same at their will and pleasure to
change, alter or make anew from time to time, as they
may think best, and shall in general have and exercise
all such rights, privileges and immunities, as by law are
incident or necessary to corporations, and which may be
necessary to the corporation herein constituted, and to
enable the members of said order to exercise all things
concerning the designs of this corporation, for the benevo-
lent relief of the sick and distressed, and for the promo-

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That this corporation shall
have power to alter and amend their by-laws at pleasure
provided, such alterations or amendment shall not conflict
or be inconsistent with the constitution and laws of the
United States, or of the State of Maryland, or of the
Grand Division of the Order of the Sons of Temperance.

Proviso.

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That nothing in this act
contained, shall be so construed as to authorise the said
corporation to issue any note, token, scrip, device or
other evidence of debt, to be used as a currency.

SEC. 6. And he it enacted, That this act of incorpora-
tion shall enure for forty years form the date of its pas-
sage, and that the Legislature reserve to itself the right
to alter or annul the same at any time thereafter.

CHAPTER 36.

Enure for 40
years.

An act entitled, an act to permit John T. Holtzman, of
Prince George's County, to bring into the State certain
slaves therein named.

1, 1847.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That John T. Holtzman, of Prince George's
county be, and he is hereby authorised to bring into this
State from the District of Columbia, negro woman named
