CHAPTER 257.

An act to incorporate the Newington Division, Number
Twenty-seven, of the Sons of Temperance, of the City

of Baltimore, and State of Maryland.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Thomas Gambrill, Thomas Jenkins,
William Carmichael, William H. Oler, Jabez S. Paul,
Alexander Kennedy, Lewis Turner, Nicholas D. Bank-
ard, William A. Hill, William McCoy, Bernard Coyle,
and others, the officers and members of the Newington
Division Number Twenty-seven, of the Sons of Tempe-
rance, of the city of Baltimore, and State of Maryland,
and their successors be, and they are hereby incorpora-
ted and made a body politic and corporate, by the name
and number of the Newington Division Number Twen-
ty-seven, of the Sons of Temperance, of the city of
Baltimore, nnd State of Maryland, and by that name
may sue and be sued, plead ami be impleaded, and have
a common seal, and the same at their pleasure, alter and
renew, and be entitled to use the powers and privileges
incident to such corporation.

Incorporated.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the said corporation
shall have power to take and hold real and personal es-

tate and securities not exceeding in value at any one I
time the sum of twelve thousand dollars, which proper-
ty shall never be divided among the members of the said
corporation, but shall descend to their successors to be
applied for the relief of sick and distressed members of
said corporation, the education of the children of de-
ceased members, and the promotion of these objects
generally.

property.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the said corporation
shall have power to make by-laws, and the same to alter
and amend at pleasure; provided, that such by-laws do
not conflct with the laws of this State, orthe United States,
or with the laws of the Grand Division of the Sons of
Temperance of the State of Maryland.

By-laws.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the said corporation
shall not be allowed to issue any note, token, device,
scrip, or other evidence of debt, to be used as a currency.
SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That this ac.t of incorpora-
tion shall enure for forty years from the passage hereof,
and that the Legislature reserves to itself the right to
alter and annul the same at pleasure.
