CHAPTER 101.

An additional supplement to the act relating to the Mary-
land Penitentiary, passed at December session, eighteen
hundred and thirty seven.

ulations chang-

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the directors of the Maryland Peniten-
tiary be, and are hereby authorised to alter and change
the rules and regulations of the institution, and to estab-
lish such new ones as they may at any time deem expe-

dient; provided, such rules and regulations shall not be
contrary to the laws of the State, or inconsistent with
the rules and regulations prescribed by the act to which
this is a supplement; and provided, the same shall have
first been submitted to and approved by the Governor of
the State.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the directors afore-

of the salaries to be paid to the deputy warden, police
and oilier officers, wall guards and superintendents em-
ployed in the penitentiary, to define their respective
duties, and to take from them such bond, with such
penalty and with such security as they may deem to be
proper for their faithful performance of duly, and to pre-

scribe the oath to be taken by all the officers, agents or
other persons officially connected with the institution,
before entering upon their respective duties.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the directors be, and
they are hereby authorised to enter into such contracts for
the employment of the convicts in the penitentiary, and
for the sale of the manufactures of the institution as they
may deem proper; and to employ such agent or agents
for the purchase of articles or goods wanted by the insti-
tution, and all agents so appointed to be allowed such
compensation as the directors may deem right and pro-
per.

Name & style.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the name and corpo-
rate style of the institution shall be the Directors of the
Maryland Penitentiary, and that all deeds for the sale of
real or leasehold estate now held, or which may hereafter
be held by the institution, shall be signed by the president
of the board, or any three of the directors appointed for
the purpose at a meeting of the board.

Repealed.

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That all laws or parts of
laws inconsistent with or repugnant to the provisions of
this act, be and they are hereby repealed.
