1845.

buy materials, borrow money, and have and exercise all
such powers as may be necessary and convenient for the
purposes contemplated by this act; provided always, that
the expenditures by the said commissioners in and about
the purchase of said land, and the erection and repair of
said buildings, shall not in the aggregate exceed the
sum of ten thousand dollars.

CHAP. 42.

Proviso.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the said commission-
ers appointed by this act shall, once in every six months,
or oftener, if required, make a full report of their pro-
ceedings to the commissioners of said county; and when
they shall have performed all the duties required of them
by this act, and the same shall be accomplished within
twelve months from the passage hereof, they shall make
a final report of their proceedings, and return all their
minutes and papers to the commissioners of said county,
to be by them preserved and kept; and the commission-
ers of the said county shall levy, as other county charges
are levied, for the use of each of the commissioners ap-
pointed by this act, such compensation for their services
as the commissioners of the said county shall, on con-
sideration, deem just and reasonable.

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That when said farm and
buildings contemplated by this act shall be in readiness
for the accommodation of the poor of said county, the
said commissioners appointed by this act shall report the
fact to the trustees of the poor of the said county, and
deliver the said farm and buildings to said trustees, to be
and remain under their management and direction as
herein provided; and the said trustees shall immediately
cause the necessary furniture for the use of the said
buildings, the stock and farming implements necessary
for carrying on of the said farm, to be procured on the
most favorable terms; and shall cause the paupers, who
then may be in the present alms house, to be removed to
said farm; and the said trustees shall have full power,
liberty and authority to appoint a physician, and over-
seer, and such other agents and laborers as they may
deem necessary on said farm, and fix the compensation
for their services, and generally, to make and establish
such by-laws, orders and rules for the relief, regulation
and labor of the poor, and for the good government of the
said poor house and farm in said county, as to them shall
from time to time appear most proper and requisite; all
which shall be conformed to and observed by said over-
seer, and all under his control, or the control of said
