CHAPTER I78.

Passed Feb.
26, 1846.

Incorporated.

An act to incorporate the Holy and Friendship Society in
the city of Baltimore.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Jacob Naipmunn, Gerson Seifensieder,
Lazarus Hirsch, Lot Kimel, Solomon May, David Rosen-
stak, Isaac Simpson, Lot Lowenthal, Solomon Klein,
Abraham Grunesvald, Simpson Reis, Kron Frederick,
Israel Woptfahat, Solomon Schulhen, Abraham Berliner,
Anset Ticter, Fath Simpson, Samuel Straws, Tobias
Hery, Abraham Bamberger and others, officers and
members of the Holy and Friendship Society of Balti-
more, be and they are hereby incorporated and made a
body corporate and politic, by the name of the Holy and
Friendship Society of Baltimore, and by that name, may
sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, answer and de-
fend, and be answered and defended, in all courts of
law and equity, and have a common seal, and may alter
the same at their pleasure, and be entitled to the favor
and privileges incident to such corporations.

May hold
property.

SEC. 2. And be it entitled, That the said corporation
shall be capable of taking and holding real and personal
estate, not exceeding in value, the sum of ten thousand
dollars, for the benevolent relief of the sick and distress-
ed, the education of the orphans of its members, and for
the promotion of those persons generally.

Corporate
powers.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the said corporation
shall and may at all times hereafter be capable in law, to
hare, receive and retain to its members and their succes-
sors, devises or bequests of any person or persons, bodies
corporate or politic, capable of making the same and the
name at their pleasure to transfer or dispose of in such
manner as they may think proper.

Power to al-
ter and amend.

Proviso.

Issues forbid.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That this corporation shall
have power to alter and amend their by-laws at pleasure;
provided, they do not conflict with the laws of the State,
or the laws of the United States.
SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That this corporation shall
not be permitted to issue any note, token, device or script
or other evidence of debt to be used as a currency.

Enure for 40
years.

SEC. 6. And be it enacted, That this act of incorpo-
ration shall inure for the period of forty years from its

passage, and that the legislature reserves to itself the right
to alter or annul this act of incorporation at pleasure.
