NOVEMBER. LAWS OF MARYLAND.

CHAP. XCV.

Passed 27th of
January, 1806.

An ACT to enlarge the powers of the levy court of Baltimore coun-
ty, and for other purposes.

WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, by the memorial of the levy court of
Baltimore county, that the mode for many years adopted in the government and support of
the alms-house of said county is susceptible of considerable improvement; and it appearing to this
general assembly that certain changes and alterations may be made with considerable advantage to
the inhabitants of said county, therefore,

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That from and after the first day of
March next, all the power, authority and jurisdiction, heretofore had, held and exercised, by the
trustees of the alms-house and work-house of Baltimore county, (except the power of filling up their
own vacancies, ) shall be had, held and exercised, by the levy court of said county, and that the
trustees of the said alms-house shall deliver over, upon request, to the said levy court, all books,
accounts, papers and proceedings, relating to the affairs of the said alms-house, copies or transcripts
of which books, papers and proceedings, it shall be the duty of the said court to allow the trustees
to make out and take when required.

III. AND BE IT ENACTED, That it shall and may be lawful for the said levy court to appoint and
authorise a purveyor of provisions to the said alms-house, whose duty it shall be to provide and fur-
nish provisions for the said alms-house, under the directions of the said court, to whom he shall an-
nually return a statement, or account, of his receipts and expenditures, to be examined and passed
at their discretion.

IV. AND BE IT ENACTED, That it shall be the duty of the said purveyor to give bond and secu-
rity, to be approved by the court aforesaid, in such penalty as the said court shall direct, to the said
court, conditioned for the faithful performance of the trust reposed in him, and upon failure to com-
ply with the conditions of said bond, it shall and may be lawful for the said court to order and direct
the said bond to be put in suit, and any sum or sums of money to be recovered in such suit or suits
shall be applied to the use and benefit of the said alms-house.

V. AND BE IT ENACTED, That it shall and may be lawful for the said court to allow a salary to
the said purveyor, not exceeding four per cent, upon the amount of the money expended by the said
purveyor, under the direction of the said court as aforesaid, which said salary shall be paid out of
the monies levied and collected for the use and support of the said institution.

CHAP. XCVI.

Passed 25th of
January, 1806.

An ACT to suspend the operation of the part of the act of assem-
bly therein mentioned.

WHEREAS by the last section of the act, entitled, An act to provide for the organization and
regulation of the courts of common law in this state, and for the administration of justice
therein, passed at the present session, it is enacted, that the fees due to the officers therein men-
tioned shall be sent out in pounds shillings and pence, and not in tobacco as heretofore, and in as
much as the fees may already have been made out in tobacco, and therefore the immediate change
would be attended with considerable inconvenience; for remedy whereof,

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the operation of the said section
of the above recited act be and the same is hereby suspended until the first day of January, eighteen
hundred and seven, any thing in the said act to the contrary notwithstanding.

CHAP. XCVII.

Passed 25th of
January, 1806.

An ACT to reduce into one the several ads of assembly respecting
elections, and to regulate said elections.

WHEREAS by the constitution of this state it is provided, chat every free white male citizen
of this state, and no other, having resided twelve months in the county next preceding the
election at which he offers to vote, and every free white male citizen of this state above twenty-
one years of age, and having obtained a residence of twelve months next preceding the election in
the city of Baltimore or the city of Annapolis, and at which he offers to vote, shall have a right of
suffrage, and shall vote, by ballot, in the election of such county or city, or either of them, for
