amendments, and that Section 71 thereof be and it is
hereby repealed, Sections 70 and 71 having been amended
by Chapter 602 of the Acts of 1939 and that a new Section
71 be and it is hereby enacted in lieu thereof, to stand in
the place and stead of the section so repealed, and all to
read as follows:

70. On the fifteenth day of August, 1912, and as often
thereafter as there may be a vacancy to be filled in the
police force, hereinafter provided for, the said board shall
hold a preliminary examination at the City Hall for appli-
cants for policeman. Notice of any and all preliminary
examinations for policemen shall be given by advertise-
ment
in at least [two] one [newspapers] newspaper pub-
lished in the City of Cambridge, at least ten days before
such examination; said notice shall state the time and
place
of said examination and the [requirements for police-
man] prerequisites for taking the same. Every applicant for
policeman must be of good moral character, not addicted to
the use of alcoholic liquors [or drinks in any form], must
be at least five feet eight inches in height, must weigh
not less than one hundred and fifty pounds, and not more
than two hundred and fifty pounds, must be between the
ages of twenty-five and [forty] thirty-five years, and must
be able to read and write a legible hand, and show a
[good] fair knowledge of the rules of the said Board of
Police Commissioners [and of the ordinances of Cam-
bridge]. All examinations for policemen must be in writ-
ing and [the examination papers shall be preserved by
said board, subject to inspection by any voter of the City
of Cambridge who may demand an inspection of the same,
for at least one year] the Board reserves the right to reject
any or all applications if in their sole discretion any appli-
cant would not be a suitable member of the Police Force
notwithstanding the fact that he may have passed the
physical and mental examination.
The said board shall
examine the papers submitted by each applicant and grade
them, taking into account in such grading the mental and
physical qualifications of each applicant, and also his fit-
ness for a police officer. Any applicant who has obtained
an average of sixty per cent in the preliminary examina-
tion aforesaid and has passed a satisfactory physical
examination may be appointed as a probationary officer
for the City of Cambridge, with all the powers and duties
of a regular police officer, for a period of six (6) months,
unless said Board of Police Commissioners, in its discre-
tion, shall dismiss such probationary officer during said
period because of his lack of the necessary requirements
and qualifications for a probationary officer, or until he
