SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland,
That Section 140 of Article 22 of the Code of
Public Local Laws of Maryland (1930 Edition), title "Wash-
ington County", sub-title "County Commissioners", be and
it is hereby repealed, and that Section 144 of said Article,
as said section was amended by Chapter 432 of the Acts of
1943, be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with
amendments, to read as follows:

144. The County Clerk shall receive for his services such
salary as the County Commissioners may, in their discre-
tion [,] prescribe, [not exceeding Two Thousand Five
Hundred Dollars ($2,500.00) per annum, and not less than
Two Thousand Dollars ($2,000.00) per annum,] payable
in equal monthly installments by the said County Commis-
sioners. The said County Commissioners are hereby au-
thorized and empowered to employ an assistant to the
County Clerk, who shall receive for his services an annual
salary fixed by the County Commissioners at their dis-
cretion [but not exceeding Eighteen Hundred Dollars
($1,800.00)], payable in equal monthly installments, and
to employ an attorney for said Commissioners, who shall
receive for his services an annual salary fixed by the
County Commissioners at their discretion [but not exceed-
ing Nine Hundred Dollars ($900.00)], payable in equal
monthly installments. The said County Commissioners are
hereby authorized and required to levy the needful taxes on
the assessable property within the county liable to taxation
as shall be sufficient to pay said salaries.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall
take effect January 1, 1955.
