(House Bill 132)
AN ACT to authorize the creation of a state debt in the
aggregate amount of Two Hundred Fifty Thousand Dol-
lars ($250,000), for the purpose of aiding in the con-
struction of a science laboratory building on the campus
of St. John's College in Annapolis, subject to the require-
ments that the said college on or before January 1, 1956,
shall have obtained elsewhere at least an equal and
matching sum for the same purposes.
WHEREAS, St. John's College is the oldest institution in
the State with a long and distinguished history dating
back to its establishment as King William's School in 1696;
and
WHEREAS, St. John's College urgently needs an adequate
science building to provide for the needs of its students, the
existing building having been constructed originally as a
dormitory in 1838; and
WHEREAS, St. John's College is the only state-aided insti-
tution to have received no such assistance toward new con-
struction since the appropriation for the erection of Randall
Hall in 1902-3; now therefore
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the Board of Public Works is hereby au-
thorized and directed to issue a State loan to be known as
the "St. John's College Loan of 1954" in the aggregate sum.
