(1947 Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation
and Duties", said sub-section having been amended by Chap-
ter 525 of the Acts of 1949, increasing the number and sal-
aries of the Deputy Sheriffs of Allegany County, RELAT-
ING TO THE DUTIES OF THE SAID DEPUTY SHER-
IFFS AND AUTHORIZING THE COUNTY COMMIS-
SIONERS OF ALLEGANY COUNTY TO PROVIDE FOR
AN ADDITIONAL DEPUTY SHERIFF.

WHEREAS, in the report of the Allegany County Grand Jury
for the January Term, 1951, attention was called to the fact
that the office of the Sheriff of Allegany County is under-
manned, it being desirable for this reason to AUTHORIZE
THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS IN THEIR DISCRETION
TO to increase the number of Deputy Sheriffs from four to
five, WHENEVER IN THEIR DISCRETION THEY SHALL
DETERMINE THAT THE NEEDS OF THE PUBLIC BUSI-
NESS SO REQUIRE; now, therefore,

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land,
That Sub-section 37B (a) of Article 87 of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1947 Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-
title "Compensation and Duties", said sub-section having been
amended by Chapter 525 of the Acts of 1949, be and it is hereby
repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

37B.

(a) The Sheriff of Allegany County shall receive an annual
salary of $4, 000.

The Sheriff may appoint four (4) five (5) deputies at an
annual salary of [$2, 400] $3, 000. each; one of said deputies
shall be assigned by the Sheriff to attend the Magistrate for
Juvenile Causes to execute his process, orders and directions,
and when not so engaged, to perform such other duties as the
Sheriff may require. One of said deputies shall be designated
by the Sheriff to keep accurate books and records of his
office in addition to his regular and usual duties and for

which he shall be paid $180. 00 per year. WHENEVER IN
THEIR DISCRETION THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
OF ALLEGANY COUNTY SHALL DETERMINE THAT
THE NEEDS OF THE PUBLIC BUSINESS SO REQUIRE,
THEY ARE AUTHORIZED AND EMPOWERED TO PRO-
VIDE FOR AN ADDITIONAL DEPUTY SHERIFF TO BE
APPOINTED BY THE SHERIFF AND TO BE PAID A
SALARY AS PROVIDED FOR HEREINABOVE.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That the increases in com-
pensation provided for hereinabove in this Act shall become
