AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section
566 of the Charter and Public Local Laws of Baltimore City
(1949 Edition), title "Miscellaneous Local Laws", sub-title
"Police Commissioner", heading "Miscellaneous", so as to
give the Police Commissioner of Baltimore City authority
to grant leave of absence, with pay, for not exceeding sixty-
one days of each year, in addition to the fifty days already
authorized, under certain conditions, TO CERTAIN EM-
PLOYEES OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT OF BALTI-
MORE CITY, MAKING PROVISION FOR A 48-HOUR
WEEK IN SAID DEPARTMENT AND RELATING GEN-
ERALLY TO THE DETAILS OF SUCH PROVISION.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 566 of the Charter and Public Local Laws
of Baltimore City (1949 Edition), title "Miscellaneous Local
Laws", sub-title "Police Commissioner", heading "Miscellan-
eous", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amend-
ments, to read as follows:
566. The said Police Commissioner is authorized, empowered
and directed to grant leave of absence, with pay, for a period
of fifty days in each year to each of the uniformed officers of
[police, policemen and detectives of the regular force em-
ployed by the said Commissioner] the Police Department of
Baltimore City, INCLUDING THE POLICEMEN, POLICE-
WOMEN, POLICE MATRONS AND ALL OTHER EM-
PLOYEES OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT WHO HAVE
THE POWER TO MAKE ARRESTS, nor shall any enforced
absence with leave on account of sickness or death be deducted
from the pay of any such [officer] officers [of police, policemen
or detective, ] or from their fifty days leave, as herein provided.
In the event that, in the judgment of the Police Commissioner
of Baltimore City, the actual number of such uniformed officers
available for duty permits, he may grant additional leave of
absence, with pay, for a period of not exceeding sixty-one days
in each year to each such uniformed officer, provided, however,
that sufficient funds are appropriated to cover the cost of the
necessary replacement of uniformed officers to be granted such
