RESOLUTIONS.
the ultimate object of all parties was the construction
of a navigable Canal from the tide water of the Poto-
mac river to some point on the navigable waters of
the Ohio river; and whereas, the State of Maryland
has appropriated to the construction of said Canal,
the sum of five millions six hundred and twenty-five
thousand dollars, exclusive of the stock held by the
Potomac Company; Virginia has exclusive of her in-
terest in the Potomac Company, appropriated the sum
of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars of which she
requires that not exceeding eighty thousand dollars,
shall be applied exclusively for the purpose of afford-
ing to her own citizens by the construction of lift locks
&c. facility of access to the canal leaving only the
sum of one hundred and seventy thousand dollars, ap-
plicable to the extension of the work towards the Ohio
river; no appropriation has yet been made by the State
of Pennsylvania, the government of the United States
has appropriated one million of dollars, but a sum be-
lieved to be not less than five hundred thousand dollars,
has been expended within the limits of the District of
Columbia, and it appears reasonable that the Govern-
ment of the United States should either contribute
from her vast resources to the prosecution and comple-
tion of the said work or transfer to the State of Mary-
land, her interest in the stock of the company in con-
sideration of the large amount contributed by the State,
to effect an object always deemed national in its char-
acter: — Therefore.
Be it resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That, our Senators and Representatives in Congress,
be requested to endeavour to procure from the Govern-
ment of the United States further aid towards the con-
struction and completion of the Chesapeake and Ohio
Canal, or a transfer to the State of Maryland, of the
interest, held by the United States in the stock of the
Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company.
