CHAP. 333.

from said registry the names of any persons which

may have been improperly or illegally placed on it.

Persons molest-
ing a voter.

SEC. 17. And be it enacted, That if any person
shall he guilty of any attempt to obstruct any legal
voter or voters, within the city of Baltimore, in the

peaceful exercise of his or their right of suffrage, or
shall create any noise or disturbance at the place of
holding the registry or election, or in the neighbour-
hood thereof, with an intent to interfere with the said

of the said registers or judges of election, to order
such person into custody, and to summon a posse, if
necessary, to arrest him, and, upon trial and convic-
tion of such offence, such person shall be sentenced to

than five hundred dollars for every such offence, in the
discretion of the court, before whom said person shall
be tried.

Expenses to be
levied.

SEC. 18. And be it enacted, That all the expenses
incurred under this act, shall be paid by the corpora-
tion of the city of Baltimore, and the money necessary
for that purpose raised as the other expenses of hold-
ing elections in said city, by taxation or otherwise.

Special ward
elections.

SEC. 19. And be it enacted, That in case of special
elections for members of the city council, it shall only
be necessary for the registers of the ward in which
said special election is to be held, to meet, as provided
by this act, for correcting their registry.

Judges of elec-
tions empow-
ered as Justi-
ces of Peace.

SEC. 20. And be it enacted, That the registers of
voters and the judges of election, during the time that
they are actually engaged in the discharge of the du-
ties of their respective offices, shall have all the pow-
ers of a justice of the peace of said city of Baltimore,
and that their warrants and commands shall be ob-
served by all the officers of the State of Maryland,
and the city of Baltimore.

Officers enjoin-
ed to preserve
peace, &c.

SEC. 21. And be it enacted, That the Sheriff of Bal-
timore city and county, and his deputies, and all the
constables and bailiffs of said city, shall, when called
on by the said registers or judges of elections, or any
two of them, assist said registers or judges of elec-
tion, as the case may be, in preserving the peace, com-
