1837.

They shall not, nor shall any director nor other
officer, have any work of any kind done at the prison;
they must furnish approved substitutes during their
absence, or the warden may appoint them at their ex-
pense; no spirits, wine, nor strong drink must he
used by them, and all wrangling and disputes must be
punished by the dismissal of both parties.
The Board of Directors shall make special regula-
tions respecting the duties of these officers, and shall
assign to them respectively by name, the offices they
are to perform, and the warden shall cause their duties
to be explained and made known to them, so that none
can be ignorant of what they are expected to do.

Article seventh. — Physician. — The Physician shall
visit the prison at least once in each day. at a certain
hour, and whenever his attendance may be required;
he must keep a Hospital Journal, in which shall be
entered the names of the convicts reported sick, whe-
ther they be admitted or not; he shall note their dis-
eases, prescriptions and treatment, and in case of
death, their age, place of birth, time of death, and
every thing which he may deem necessary; this record
shall remain at the prison, and be open to the inspec-
tion of the authorities thereof.

When absent, he shall procure some one to attend in
his place, to be approved by the Monthly Committee
or Directors; he shall have such aid as he may re-
quire, on information to the warden; none shall
interfere, with the treatment of the sick or the con-
duct of the hospital, except so far as may be neces-
sary to enforce discipline; he shall examine convicts
at their admission, and note their bodily defects for
the direction of the warden in assigning their tasks;
when and thing is necessary for the hospital, he
must make a requisition on the warden, and keep
an account thereof, to be noted in his monthly report
to the Board of Directors; he must make a report to
the board monthly, of the health of the prison, inclu-
ding post mortem examinations, and furnish the ward-
en daily with a list of these exempted from labor or
reported sick.
