CHAP. 320.

In passing to and from the front building and tire
prison.

Espionage for-
bid.

He must not encourage any espionage or tale-bear-
ing among the convicts; he must govern the institu-
tion by the weight of its authorities, and the prison-
ers must be made to feel that the officers are entirely
cognizant of all their improper designs, and prepared
to counteract or prevent any effort on their part.

Extent of right
to punish.

He may punish, to the extent of thirteen lashes,
and ten days' confinement on bread and water, and
may authorise his deputies and under officers to give
from one to five lashes for infractions of discipline; he
must present a record of punishments and offences to
the monthly meetings of the board, that they may
judge of the condition of the discipline, and he must

&c. forbid.

Neither the warden, nor any director, nor other
person having any official relation with the prison,

den's duties.

Article fifth. — Assistant Warden. — This officer shall
aid the Warden in carrying out the laws of the State
and the regulations of the prison; he must receive and
execute the warden's orders when present, but in his
absence must take his place, with all the warden's
powers; in the warden's absence from the prison,
night or day. the assistant warden must be present;
he shall have particular charge of the victualling de-
partment, and be present at meals, unless his place be
taken by the warden; and he shall also examine the
whole prison alter the hour of locking up, and see
that all is safe; his duties shall be mostly of a supervi-

charge specific duties when assigned to him.

Article sixth. — Deputy Keepers. — They shall con-
tinue at all times, day and night, within the prison,

unless by permission of the warden, and do all the
duties assigned them by the keeper, in addition to
those directed by the board; they are particularly to en-
force silence and labor among the prisoners, and to
preserve the strictest order and discipline.
