educate the poor children of said almshouse at the rate
of ten dollars per annum for every such child that shall
receive the benefits of said school.

A supplement to an act, entitled, an act to provide for
the public instruction of youth in Primary schools
throughout this State, passed at December session
eighteen hundred and twenty-five, chapter one hun-
dred and sixty-two, so far as relates to Dorchester
County.

Preamble.

WHEREAS, the present system of schools in Dor-
chester county in not found to produce the beneficial
results which the friends of education desire; and where-
as, it is conceded that the general diffusion of know-
ledge among us raises the standard of moral influence
which is the best guarantee for the preservation of our
republican institutions; and whereas, it is in accord-
ance with the dictates of philanthrophy, and the enlight-
ened spirit of the age. to offer in common to all our
youth the advantages of education, without regard to
the adventitious circumstances of birth or fortune: —
Therefore,

SECTION I. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the levy court of Dorchester county
be, and they are hereby authorised and required to
levy the sum of four thousand dollars on all the assess-
