CHAPTER 96.

CHAP. 96.

An act to authorise the Stewards of the Methodist Epis-
copal Church, on Calvert circuit, to hold property for
the use of said church.

Passed Feb. 26,
1838.

SEC. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Thomas Mitchell, Casino Sunderland,
Isaac Bower, James I. Norfolk. John M. Williams,
William T. Wilson, and James Humphreys, the present
Stewards of the Methodist Episcopal Church on Cal-
vert Circuit, in Calvert county, and their successors to
be duly appointed according to the rules and regula-
tions of the said church, be, and they are hereby au-

thorised and empowered to purchase, receive and hold
by deed or conveyance in fee simple, executed, acknow-
ledged and recorded according to law, to themselves
and their successors appointed as aforesaid, forever,
any lot or parcel of ground lying in Calvert county
aforesaid, not exceeding the quantity of twenty-five
acres, in trust for the use and benefit of the said church

as a parsonage on said circuit, which said property
whilst so held shall be free from taxation.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That whenever the offi-
cial members of the said church on said circuit, in
quarterly conference assembled, or a majority of them,
shall direct a sale or disposition of any property, held
as aforesaid under and by virtue of this act, the said
stewards and their successors, or a majority of them,

shall execute and acknowledge according to law, a deed
or deeds for the same or any part thereof to any pur-
chaser or purchasers, or to any person or persons with
whom they may exchange the same for other property
in the said county, under the order and direction of
the said official members, or a majority of them met as
aforesaid, and shall invest the proceeds of sale for the
use and benefit of the said church on said circuit.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the said stewards and
their successors shall be, and they are hereby empow-
ered to sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, in
any of the courts of this State as if they were hereby
incorporated and made a body politic.
