Sec.

if sold in a county on the Eastern Shore,

to treasurer of said Shore, if in a county on

Western Shore, to treasurer of said Shore,

for use of colonization society; sheriff to

give bond for money received, &c.

FREE

NEGROES AND SLAVES— Sheriffs and con-

stables required to arrest any free negro,

&c. who may come into this State, contra-

ry to the provisions of this act, &c.

Penalty of $20 to be paid and all jail

fees, &c. by free negro, &c. upon failure

to pay to be committed and sold as herein

provided in relation to those who have in-

curred the penalty of $500, &c.

If said negro shall not remove out of the

State within five days after he shall have

paid said $20, shall be deemed to have come

a second time into the State and shall be

liable as if he had done so,

Not to prevent any white citizens of any

other State, &c. who shall come on a visit

and not to reside, or passing through, &. c.

from bringing with him any free negro or

mulatto in the capacity of servant, said

servant to be and continue in attendance

and depart at same time said white citi-

zens shall leave, &c.

Magistrates courts, or orphans' courts

where there are no magistrates courts, upon

information that any free negro, &c. are

residing, &c. without visible means of sup-

port, to direct sheriff or constable to bring

them such free negro, &c. to summon

witnesses to enquire into the condition of

such, &c. and if they shall be of opinion

that said negro, &c. have not the necessa-

ry means of support, &c. to issue an order

requiring sheriff, &c. to sell said negro, &c.

forthwith to highest bidder to serve in the

capacity of a slave for the year in which
said sale shall be made, first giving 10 days

notice of such sale, not to take effect until

1st January next,
