CHAP. 268.

Fines, &c. how

consent of their masters or mistresses.

SEC. 17. And be it enacted, That all taxes, fines, forfei-
tures and penalties imposed by said commissioners, by
virtue of any law or ordinance, be applied in such man-
ner, for the use of the said town, as may from time to
time, by ordinance be directed.

SEC. 18. And, be it enacted, That the said commis-
sioners shall have full power to grade and level streets
and alleys, remove all nuisances and obstructions from the
same; and also to prevent encroachments by buildings or
otherwise, on the streets and alleys; and all the property,
rights, power and authority now held by the present com-
missioners of said town under former laws, grants or oth-
erwise, be and they are hereby vested in the commission-
ers elected in pursuance of this act, as soon as an election
shall take place.

SEC. 19. And be it enacted, That the present commis-
sioners of said town shall have, until the time appointed
by this act for the election of commissioners, the same
power, to all intents and purposes, which they now pos-

sess.

SEC. 20. And be it enacted, That nothing herein con-
tained shall be so construed as to authorise or empower
said corporation, to issue any note, certificate, token or evi-
dence of debt, to be used as currency.

SEC. 21. And be it enacted, That this act shall con-
tinue and be in force for the period of thirty years from
the passage thereof, unless sooner repealed, altered or
amended by the legislature of this State.

CHAPTER 268.

1840.

An act to authorise the Justices of the Levy Court of Fre-
derick County, and the Commissioners of Tax for Car-
roll County, in their discretion, to levy a sum of money
to build a Bridge over Sam's Creek, on the public road
leading from Johnsville to Union Bridge.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That from and after the passage of this act, it
shall and may be lawful for the levy court of Frederick
county, and the commissioners of tax for Carroll county,
in their discretion, to levy a sum of money upon the assessa-
