1839.

SEC. 2. And be it, enacted, The more effectually to
enable the Baltimore United Fire Department, to suppress
riot and insubordination at fires, and to bring the authors

and instigators of the same to punishment, that the presi-

dent of the said institution, or chairman of the standing
committee, or any committee appointed by them, when-
ever in their opinion an investigation into the origin of
any riot at a fire, and an examination of witnesses in re-
ference thereto may elicit the truth and lead to the detec-
tion and conviction, of the proper persons, may require
and direct any single justice of the peace of the city of
Baltimore, to issue his subpoena, directed to any constable

of the said city, commanding him to summon any person

or persons who may be designated by the said president,
chairman of the standing committee or sub-committee, to
appear before the said Baltimore United Fire Department,

peace shall have and exercise all the powers to coerce the
attendance of witnesses before the said Baltimore United

Fire Department, or standing committee, or sub-commit-

tee, as they now possess by law in relation to subpoenas
returnable before them.

CHAPTER 266.

To coerce wit-
nesses to attend.

An act authorising the Levy Court of Frederick County, in
their discretion, to levy a sum of money to build a Bridge
over Fishing Creek, at or near Lewistown, on the road
leading from Mechanicstown to Frederick.

Passed Mar. 17,
1840.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the judges of the levy court of Frederick
county, be and they are hereby authorised and empowered,
in their discretion, to levy a sum of money, not exceed-

jng five hundred dollars, on the assessable property in said
county, in two equal annual instalments, for the purpose
of building a bridge over Fishing creek, at or near Lewis-
town, on the road leading from Mechanicstown to Frede-
rick.

said, be and the same are hereby authorised to contract
with any person or persons to build said bridge, and are
