CHAPTER 216.

An act to authorise the drawing of a Lottery for the bene-
fit of Female Education.

CHAP. 217.

1840.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the trustees of the Patapsco Female In-
stitute, be and they are hereby authorised and empowered
to propose a scheme or schemes of, and draw a lottery to
raise the nett sum of fifteen thousand dollars, or to sell
and dispose of the privilege of doing the same; provided,
that before any ticket or tickets in said lottery shall be
sold, bond with security shall be given to the State of
Maryland, in the penal sum of thirty thousand dollars, to
be approved of by one of the judges of Baltimore county
court, conditioned that within three months after the com-
pletion of the drawing of said lottery, the fortunate ad-
venturers shall be satisfied and paid for all prizes drawn
by them in said lottery; and provided further, that any and
every scheme of a lottery proposed by virtue of this act,
shall before the drawing thereof be approved by the com-
missioners of lotteries, who are hereby requested to lend
their aid in furthering the object of this law.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That as soon as the sum of
money to be raised as aforesaid shall be received by or be
available to the said trustees, the treasurer of the Western
Shore shall thenceforth cease to pay annually to the said
trustees the sum of eight hundred dollars, as directed by
the thirty-eighth resolution, passed by the General Assem-
bly of Maryland, at December session eighteen hundred
and thirty-five, and the said resolution shall thereafter be
annulled and repealed; provided always, that the eight
poor children mentioned in the said resolution shall con-
tinue to be admitted and educated in the said Patapsco
Institute in the same manner as if the said resolution had
not been repealed.

An act to aid in the establishment of a Female Seminary
in Frederick City.

WHEREAS, it is represented to this General Assembly by
sundry citizens of Frederick city and county, that a Female
