undertake to act under this law, be and they are hereby appointed commissioners, in the place and
stead of the persons named as commissioners in the act of assembly to which this act is a supple-

CHAP. XX.

Passed Decem-
ber 23, 1810.

An ACT to confirm to Lewis Grant Davidson, of the City of Balti-
more, the surname of Davidson.

WHEREAS Lewis Grant Davidson, (formerly Lewis Grant, ) of the city of Baltimore, by his
petition to this general assembly, hath set forth, that by the last will and testament of his
uncle, Samuel Davidson, late of the district of Columbia, deceased, a considerable real, personal
and mixed estate, was devised and bequeathed to him by the name of Lewis Grant, upon the special
condition and trust that he should, by lawful authority, as soon us possible, take, assume and use, for
ever thereafter, to him and his heirs, the surname of Davidson, in lieu of Grant; that being desir-
ous to comply as soon as might be with the request of his said uncle, and to take possession of the
said estate, which under the said will could only be done upon his complying with the said condi-
tion, he did soon after the death of his said uncle take, assume and use the said surname of David-
son, in lieu of Grant, and did give public notice declaring such his determination, and of his inten-
tion to apply for a law sanctioning such change of his surname; he therefore prayed that a law might
pass ratifying and confirming the surname of Davidson by him taken, assumed and used, from the
time of such public notice, and to confirm all acts by him done by and under the surname of David-
son, and declaring that he and his heirs should for ever hereafter be called, known, named and de-
signated, by the surname of Davidson, in lieu of Grant; and it appearing reasonable that the prayer
of the said petitioner should be granted, therefore,

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the surname of Davidson taken,
assumed and used, by Lewis Grant, of the city of Baltimore, be and the same hereby is confirmed
and made valid, and the name of the said Lewis Grant is hereby changed and altered unto the
name of Lewis Grant Davidson; and he and his descendants shall at all times hereafter be called
and known by, and hold and use, the surname of Davidson only, and by such surname shall sue and
be sued in any court of law or equity.

III. AND BE IT ENACTED, That all securities, promises, contracts, assurances, deeds and lawful
acts whatsoever, heretofore made or done, or hereafter to be made or done, by or to the said Lewis
Grant, by the name and surname of Lewis Grant Davidson, shall be of the same force, validity and
effect, and equally avail to all intents and purposes, as if the name and surname of Lewis Grant
Davidson had been the true and proper name and surname of the said Lewis Grant from his birth,
any law or custom to the contrary notwithstanding.
