CHAPTER 84.

An act to incorporate the Independant Fire Company, of
the City of Annapolis.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That Alexander Randall, John S. Selby,
Somerville Pinkney, Richard Swann, Richard I. Cow-
man, Dennis Claude, Jun., Nicholas H. Green, Tho-
mas Franklin, George Mackubin, George McNeir,
Jonathan Pinkney, James Iglehart, George Wells,
John Johnson, Thomas S. Alexander, William S.
Green, James H. Iglehart, Thomas G. Waters, John
W. Whittington. Basil Shephard, Philip Clayton and
David S. Caldwell, and their successors, and such
other persons, as are now, or hereafter may become
members of the same, shall be, and are hereby declared
to be one community, corporation, or body politic, for
ever hereafter, by the name of the Independent Fire
Company, of the city of Annapolis, the object of
which company is hereby declared to be the protection
of property within the city of Annapolis, from de-
struction by fire, for which purpose they shall be, and
are hereby made able and capable in law to have, pur-
chase, receive, possess and retain to them and their
successors, lands, tenements, rents, annuities or other
hereditaments, and the same to grant, demise, alien or
dispose of, in such manner as they may judge most
conducive to the interest of the company; provided
nevertheless, that said corporation, or body politic, shall
not at any time hold or possess property, real or mix-
ed, exceeding the sum of ten thousand dollars.

Legal capacities.

May make by-laws.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That the said company and
their successors by the name aforesaid, shall for ever
hereafter be able and capable in law, to sue and be
sued, plead and be impleaded, answer and be answer-
ed, defend and be defended, in all, or any courts of jus-

tice whatsoever, and also to have, make and use a com-

mon seal, and the same to break, alter and renew at
pleasure, and to assemble and meet at such times and
places, as they may agree upon, and also from time to
time, to form and adopt such laws, and regulations for
the government of said company, and the concerns
thereof, as they may judge necessary and useful, and
