1838.

make any bet or wager on the result of any election or

elections to take place in this State; and any person or

persons offending against this act shall be liable to

indictment in the county courts of this State, if the,
offence be committed in any county, and in Baltimore
city court if the offence be committed in Baltimore
city, and on conviction thereof, shall be fined a sum
not less than fifty dollars, nor more than five hundred
dollars, to be collected as other fines.

CHAP. 393.

Penalty for violat-

ing.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That all fines collected
under this act shall be paid to the Treasurer of the
Western Shore for the benefit of the school fund of the
State.

money hereafter in any part of the State as a wager or
bet upon elections in this State or elsewhere, shall be

An act to encourage the formation of Volunteer Compa-
nies.

Passed April 6,
1839.

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this State to encour-
age the formation of Uniform Volunteer Companies,
as affording the most prompt and efficient moans to sup-
press insurrection and preserve order and tranquility
within our borders; — Therefore,

Preamble.

SECTION l. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That every citizen of the State, above the
age of eighteen years, who shall, after the passage of

this law, serve seven years successively, in a uniform

volunteer company, shall after that time, be exempted
from militia duty, except during war or insurrection.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That the Governor, by
and with the advice and consent of the Senate, shall
appoint and commission one third Lieutenant, and one
Ensign in addition to the officers already provided
for by law, in every company of uniform volunteers
that may be formed in this State.
