NOVEMBER. LAWS OF MARYLAND.

CHAP.

CLVI1I.

Hughes', under the act of eighteen hundred and six, as far as said road runs through the estate of
John Shank, of Washington county, and if, in the opinion of the said commissioners, a different
and more eligible route can be adopted by altering the direction of the said road, the said commis-
sioners shall return a plot of the said alteration, if any should be made by them, to the said levy
court.

And open a
road, &c.

III. AND BE IT ENACTED, That if the levy court of Washington county should confirm the said
road, so as aforesaid altered, that then the said levy court shall. proceed to open and clear the said
road, agreeably to the provisions of the act, entitled, An act to lay out and open a road in Wash-
ington county, passed at November session, one thousand eight hundred and six, and the said road
for ever thereafter shall be deemed a public highway, and kept in repair as other public roads in said

county are.

Commissioners
allowance.

IV. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the commissioners appointed by this act shall receive the same
compensation as the commissioners appointed by the act passed November session, eighteen hundred
and six, entitled, An act to lay out and open a road in Washington county.

CHAP. CLIX.

Passed 20th of
January, 1808.

An ACT to establish a board of agriculture For Charles county.

Preamble.

WHEREAS societies for the promotion of agriculture and domestic manufactures would, by
exciting a spirit of emulation, and by diffusing useful information, tend much to the ad-
vancement of the prosperity of the state, and ought to be encouraged; therefore,

A board to be
erected, &c.

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That there be erected, and hereby is
erected, a board of agriculture in Charles county, in the state of Maryland, and that the said board
of agriculture be regulated under the management and direction of thirteen trustees, in the manner
herein after mentioned.

Managers ap-
pointed, &c.

III. AND BE IT ENACTED, That Robert Ferguson, Caleb Hawkins, Charles Smith, Philip Stew-
art, Francis Newman, John Campbell, Joseph Green, Henry H. Chapman, George Parnham, Ro-
bert Brent, Alexander Green, Samuel Chapman, and Clement Dorsey, be and they are hereby ap-
pointed managers of the said board of agriculture, and the said managers, and their successors, to
be elected in the manner herein after mentioned, shall be, and they are hereby erected and declared
to be, a body politic, in deed and in law, by the name of The Managers of the Board of Agricul-
ture for Charles county, by which name and title they the said managers, and their successors, shall
be capable to take and hold, to them and their successors, for the use of the said board of agricul-
ture, monies or effects, not exceeding fifteen hundred dollars, and the same, or any part thereof, to,
put out to interest for the use of the said board, in such manner as the said managers, or any seven
of them, may determine, and to apply the emolument thereof for the promotion of the objects con-
templated by this act of incorporation.

Who may pro-
pose a scheme,

&c.

IV. AND BE IT ENACTED, That it shall may be lawful to and for the said managers, or any
' seven of them, to propose a scheme or schemes of a lottery for raising a sum of money, not exceed-
ing one thousand dollars, and to sell and dispose of the tickets thereof, provided the said managers,
or any seven of them, do, before the sale of any ticket or tickets in the said lottery, give bond to
the state of Maryland, in the penalty of ten dollars, conditioned that they will well and truly apply
so much of the money arising therefrom, within twelve months after the drawing of said lottery, as
will satisfy the fortunate adventurers for prizes drawn by them, and after deducting the necessary
expenses incurred in said lottery, and the residue thereof to the purposes of the said board of
agriculture; and the said bond shall be lodged in the clerk's office of Charles county, there to be re-
corded, and upon such bond, or office copy thereof, suit or suits may be instituted against the obli-
gors therein, for any breach or non-compliance with the condition thereof.

And make or-
dinances, &c.

V. AND EE IT ENACTED, That the said managers, and their Successors, or any seven of them,
shall have full power and authority to make ordinances for the good government of the said society;

to appoint a president, secretary and treasurer, to the said society, and to award and dispose of the
annual emoluments in such premiums or medals as may be best calculated to promote the improvement
of domestic manufactures or agriculture in the. said county.

VI. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the treasurer so to be appointed shall, before he enters on the
duties of the said office, enter into bond to the said board of agriculture, with such security as the
