may enable them to manage with convenience their tem-
poral concerns. Therefore,
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the present members of the Evangelical
Lutheran Synod of the Stale of Maryland and their succes-
sors, shall be and hereby are created and declared to be a
body corporate by the name, style and title of the Evan-
gelical Lutheran Synod of the State of Maryland, and by
the same name shall have perpetual succession and shall be
able and capable in law to sue and be sued, plead and be
impleaded in courts of law or equity in this State or else-
where, and to make and have a common seal, and the same
to break, alter or renew at their pleasure, and also to ordain
and establish such by-laws and ordinances as shall be
necessary ami proper for the regulating the temporal con-

cerns of said synod, for promoting religion in it, provided
they be not repugnant to this act or the laws of this State.
Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That the said synod shall
consist of a president, secretary, treasurer, for the time
being, together with such ministers of the gospel and lay-
men, as they in their wisdom and prudence may from time
to time admit as members of said synod.

Proviso.
Officers.

Sec. 3. And be it enacted, That the said synod may
annually elect a president, secretary and treasurer, who are
to comply with such rules and regulations as may be adop-
ted by the said synod.

Sec. 4. And be it enacted, That the said synod and
their successors by the name and style aforesaid, shall be
able and capable in law, to have, purchase, take, receive
and hold lands, tenements, rents, annuities and other heri-
detraments which may be sold devised or in any other way
conveyed to said synod for their use, or in trust for them,

CHAPTER 91.

 

An act more properly to divide the States donations to Aca-
demies in Worcester county.

Passed Feb.
12, 1844.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That from and after the passage of this act, the
Treasurer of the Western Shore, is hereby authorised and
required to pay the donations to academies belonging to Wor-
