may be lawful for Joseph Sprigg of Hampshire connty in
the State of Virginia, to remove his negro slaves from his
farm in Virginia, to Allegany county, in the State of Mary-
land, and from his said farm in Allegany county to his farm
in Hampshire county in the State of Virginia, as often and

at such times as the said Joseph Sprigg may deem fit, solely
for the cultivation and improvement of said farms. Pro-
vided nevertheless, that the said Joseph Sprigg, shall first
have complied with the provisions of the act of assembly
passed at December session, eighteen hundred and thirty-
three, chapter eighty-seven, and the several supplements
thereto, requiring the payment of a tax for the use of the
colonization society, and the filing of a list of said slaves
with the clerk of Allegany county court, and provided
further, that the said Joseph Sprigg, shall not be required
to comply with provisions of the aforegoing acts, requiring
the payment of a tax, for the use of the colonization society
but once for the privileges granted by this act

CHAPTER 289.
|

|
An act entitled a supplement to the act entitled, an act to
facilitate the collection of a portion of the tax levied in
pursuance of the act passed at March session, eighteen
hundred and forty-one, chapter twenty-three.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That it shall be the duty of the President or
other proper officer of the banks, and of all other of the
incorporated institutions of this State, semi-annually alter
the passage of this act, to set apart and withhold out of the
dividends, or profits, when dividends are not declared, on
the stock of said banks and other incorporated institutions,
the amount of the tax, levied on the stocks of said banks
and other incorporated institutions, under the act of March
session, eighteen hundred and forty-one, chapter twenty-
three, and its supplements, without reference to the place
of residence of the stockholders therein, and to pay the
said tax to the Treasurer of this State, who shall give pro-

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That it shall be the duty of
the register of the city of Baltimore, semi-annually after
the passage of this act, to set apart and pay over to the
Treasurer of this State, out of the interest on the stock of
the city of Baltimore, the amount of the tax levied on said
