hereafter become members, agreeably to the rules and bye-
laws thereof, and their successors are hereby declared to
be a community, corporation or body politic, by the name
style and title of The Society for the relief of the Indigent
Sick, and by that name shall have succession, and shall be
capable in law to sue and be sued, implead and be implead-
ed, and to, make, have and use a common seal, and the same
to break, alter and renew at pleasure, and in general to do
all acts which may be necessary and proper to carry into
effect the provisions of this charter.

May hold real
and personal
estate, &c.

SEC. 2.. And be it enacted, That it shall and may be
lawful to and for the said corporation to have, hold, take
and receive lands and tenements in fee or for a less estate,
goods, chattels, monies, Blocks and other properly real and
personal which have hereafter been or shall hereafter be
given to or acquired by the said society whether by gift,
devise, bargain and sale, legacy or otherwise, and the same
to use, improve, build upon, lease, sell or convey, provided

nevertheless. that the value of the property real, personal
and mixed, to be held by the said corporation at any one
tune shall not exceed the sum of sixty thousand dollars.

Directresses
and Managers

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That Mrs. E. Rhodes Har-
ney, be the first directress; Mrs. John Purviance, the second
directress; Mrs. Stephen Williams, the third directress;
Mrs. John Gill, the fourth directress; Mrs. Elizabeth
Whiteford, the treasurer, and Miss Esther M. Harris, the
secretary; and that the following persons be the managers,
to wit: Mrs. Elizabeth Garrett, Mrs. Isaiah Mankin, Mrs.
Maria Sweney, Mrs. Keturah Benson, Mrs. Ann Edes, Mrs.
Elizabeth Robinson, Mrs. Robert Leslie, Mrs. Rachel
Rowden, Mrs. Ann Landstreet, Mrs. Elizabeth Galt, Mrs.
Hall, Mrs. Eliza Hayne, Mrs. Matilda Kemp, Mrs. Fanny
Purviance, Mrs. Ellen Taylor, Mrs. Ann Pown, Mrs Pri-
cilla Locke, Mrs. Ann Jones, Mrs. Rachel Nowland, Mrs.
Karlhaus, Mrs. Turner, Mrs. McNeal, Miss Ann Peachey,
Miss Baker, Miss Peters, Miss Ann Dulany, Miss Delia
Robinson, Miss Margaret Purviance, Miss Mary Rogers,
Miss Letetia Bandt, Miss Eliza Young, Miss Ann Barry,
Miss Louisa Cole, Miss Margaret Harwood and Miss Aus-
tin, all of whom are hereby declared to be the officers as
above mentioned by the said society under this charter, and
respectively act as such until an election shall take place
as hereinafter prescribed and directed.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That William McDonald, the
Rev. John C. Backers, the Rev. Henry V. D. Johns, Tho-
mas Kelso, James Brundige, Robert Armstrong and George
Brown, and their successors, to be appointed as hereinafter
directed, shall be, and they are hereby appointed trustees,
