CHAP. 116.

Time extend-
ed fur making
payment into
the treasury

ment, and confirmation of said valuations, a tax shall be
laid as prescribed by the forty-fifth section.
Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That in all the counties, cities,
and districts, wherein the assessments have been or may be
made and returned according to the provisions of. said act,
the time for payment into the treasury of the first quarter
of said taxes is extended to the first day of June next, so
that one half at least of the present years taxes shall be
collected and paid into the treasury by that day, and the re-
mainder shall be collected and paid into the treasury on the
first days of September and December, as required by the

forty-sixth and forty-seventh sections of said act; provided
however, that for the city of Baltimore, one fourth of the
taxes for eighteen hundred and forty-one, shall be collected
and paid into the treasury of the western shore, by the first
Wednesday of June next, and the remainder on the first
Wednesday of July, August, September, October and De-
cember, and for the year eighteen hundred and forty-two,
one fourth of the taxes shall he collected and paid into the
treasury by the first Wednesdays of August, September, Oc-
tober and December, and after the present year said taxes
shall be collected and paid in March, June, September and
December, as required by said act; provided however, that
the penalties imposed by the forty-eighth, are hereby post-
poned, until the expiration of one month from the first day
of June next, and shall afterwards be enforced according
to the provisions of that section.

Sec. 3. And be it enacted, That as to all those counties,
cites and districts, wherein further time is allowed under the
first section of this act, the collectors shall be and they are
hereby required to collect and return to the treasury at least
one half of the taxes to be levied in said county, city, or
district for the present year, on or before the first day of
December next, and the residue thereof on or before the
first day of March, eighteen hundred and forty-three; so
that the present year's taxes shall be fully collected and
paid by said month of March, eighteen hundred and forty-
three, subject to the penalties imposed by the said original
act.

act as collec-
tor, in case of
vacancy

Sec. 4. And be it enacted, That in case any person who
has been or may be appointed collector has refused or may
hereafter refuse to accept said trust, the sheriff of the
county, district, or city as the case may he, and is hereby
authorized to perform the duties required of the collectors,
unless a new appointment of collector shall be made within
twenty days after the passage of this act, where a vacancy
already exists, or within twenty days after any such refusal
shall be signified to the proper appointing power, and said
