CHAP. 68.

of Washington county court, a list of said slaves so brought
into this State, stating their ages, with an affidavit thereto
attached, that the same is a true and faithful list of the slaves
so removed, 1 and that they were not brought into this State
for the purpose of sale, and that they are slaves for life; and
provided also, that the sum of fifteen dollars for each slave
between the age of twelve and forty-five years, and the sum
of five dollars for each slave above the age of forty-five
years and under twelve years of age, so brought into this
State, shall be paid to the said clerk of Washington county
court, to be paid over by him to the Treasurer of the
Western Shore, for the use and benefit of the Colonization
Society of this State,

An act to incorporate the Trustees of Bethel School House,

in Cecil County.

Preamble.

Whereas, a public school has been organized at or near
Bethel meeting house in Cecil county, and the following per-
sons appointed as trustees, viz: Samuel Thompson, David
D. Pearce, John L. Clayton, John R. Price and James Ken-
nady, and have desired an act of incorporation—therefore,

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the said trustees above named, and their
successors, shall be a body corporate, and shall have suc-

School House, and by that name may sue and be sued, and
have a corporate seal, which they may break, alter and

change at pleasure; may hold property to an amount not
exceeding two thousand dollars, and dispose of the same;
may make by-laws, not contrary to the laws of this State or
of the United States, and do all other acts necessary for the
regulation, prosperity and the promotion of education in said
school.

Vacancies—

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That when a vacancy occurs
in the board of trustees, the same shall be filled by an elec-
tion, and at such elections, every free while male citizen
that may have contributed to the support of said school, by
donation, subscription or otherwise, and residing within three
miles of said school, shall be entitled to vote for trustees at
such election.

Sec. 3. And be it enacted, That if any trustee shall neg-
lect to attend to the duties of his office for the space of
twelve months, his place shall be considered vacant,
