CHAPTER 141.

26, 1842.

An act for the benefit of Levin W. Bollard, of Somerset
County.

Preamble.

Whereas, it is represented to his General Assembly,
that Doctor Levin W. Ballard, has become entitled to a
certain negro slave for life, in Mississippi, which lie is de-
sirous should live in this State—therefore,

May intro-
duce slave.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
the introduction into this State, of negro boy John, aged
about fifteen years, a slave for life, by the said Doctor

Provisoes

Levin W. Ballard, is hereby made legal and valid to all in-
tents and purposes; provided, the name, age and sex of said
slave, shall be recorded in the office of the clerk of So-
merset county court, within thirty days From the passage
of this act; and provided also, said Levin W. Ballard, shall
within thirty days from the passage of this act, make affida-
vit before some justice of the peace of the county of So-
merset, and have the same filed in the office of the clerk of
Somerset county, of his intention to become a citizen of
this State; and provided also, that the said Levin W. Ballard
shall within the time aforesaid, file his affidavit with the
clerk of said county court, that he hath not removed said
slave into the State for the purpose of sale, and that said
boy John is a slave for life; and provided also, the sum of
fifteen dollars shall be paid to the clerk of Somerset count)
court, at the lime of making 1 lie affidavit aforesaid, to be
paid over by linn to the treasurer of the western shore for
the use and benefit of the colonization society of this State.

 

CHAPTER 142.

Passed Feb
28, 1842.

An act to authorize the Commissioners of the Tax for Saint
Mary's County, to erect a Bridge herein described.

Authorised to
build.

Proviso.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the commissioners of the tax for Saint Mary's county,
be and they are hereby authorised and empowered to direct
a bridge to be built over the run passing through the the
farm of John Blackiston, where said run crosses the road
leading from Chaptin to Bidlen Neck; provided, that in their
judgement such a bridge is required by the public interest.
