CHAPTER 80.

An act to incorporate the Western Beneficial Society of
Baltimore.

CHAP. 80.

Passed Feb. 15,
1841.

WHEREAS, Henry W. Gibson, Elijah Jean, George
Grubb, John R. Pedrick, William Ford, Joshua Crooks,
John Maloney, Jacob Ball, Samuel W. T. Daley, and
others, have formed themselves into a society for the pur-
pose of affording relief to each other in their respective
families in the event of sickness, distress and death, and
have prayed lor an act of incorporation, that they may
better execute their benevolent intentions — Therefore,

Preamble.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Henry W. Gibson, Elijah Jean, George
Grubb, John R. Pedrick, William Ford, Joshua Crooks,
John Maloney, Jacob Ball, Samuel W. T. Daley, and others
who now are or may hereafter become members of said
society, and their successors, are hereby declared to be
one community and body corporate, by the name, style and
title of the Western Beneficial Society of Baltimore, and by
that name they shall be, and are hereby made able and capa-
ble in law, to receive contributions, and purchase, possess,
enjoy and retain to them and their successors, lands, tene-
ments, rents, annuities, or other hereditaments, and the same
to dispose of in such manner as they may judge most condu-
cive to the interest of the said society; provided, that the
said corporation or body politic, shall not at any one time
hold or possess property, real, personal or mixed, exceed-
ing the sum often thousand dollars; and provided also, that
nothing herein contained shall be construed to authorise or
empower said society to do or perform any act not neces-
sary to the attainment of the benevolent purpose for which
the said society is herein declared to be incorporated.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That said society and their
successors by the aforesaid name, shall forever hereafter be
able and capable in law to sue and be sued in all or any
courts of justice whatsoever; and the said society may also
adopt such by-laws and regulations as they may deem ne-
cessary for the government thereof, the authentication of
its acts, and the proper management of its concerns; provi-
ded, that the same shall not he contrary to any provisions
of this act, or the laws of this State or of the United States.
