CHAP. 234.
Oath of office.

lector within the limits of said village, who shall take an
oath or affirmation before some justice of the peace of said
county that he will faithfully and impartially perform the
duties required of him as bailiff, constable and collector
within the limits of said village by virtue of this act, with-
out favor, affection or partiality; and the said bailiff, consta-
ble and collector shall give bond in the same manner, and
under the same penalties that the several constables of said

stable to, attend the meetings of the commissioners whene-
ver he shall be required to perform such services as shall
be by them directed for the effectual accomplishment of
this act; to prevent the tumultuous and irregular meetings of
slaves and free negroes within the limits of said village; or
if so assembled, to disperse by lawful means, and to punish
by moderate correction, all such slaves and free negroes as
shall be found wandering about the streets in the night
time, and to prevent slaves frequenting the houses of other
persons in said village without the consent or permission of
their owners.

Fines and for-
feitures.

SEC. 18. And be it enacted, That all taxes, fines, forfeit-
ures and penalties imposed by said commissioners by virtue
of any ordinance, be applied in such manner for the use of
said village, as may by ordinance be directed.

CHAPTER 234.

An act for the more effectual Collection of Taxes in Alle-
gany County.

Preamble.

WHEREAS, it has been found, by experience, that the
laws heretofore passed, providing for the collection of tax-
es in Allegany county, are inadequate for that purpose, and
that the annual proceedings under said laws, against delin-
quent land owners, in order to compel payment of the tax-
es, have cost the people of said county considerable sums
of money, which expense ought to be diminished, both in
justice, to the county and to the land proprietors, who can-
not redeem his land without paying his proportion of such
expense; and whereas, for the convenience of all who are
interested, the subject ought to be embraced in a single act
of Assembly:

Collector shall

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Ma-
ryland, That in all cases where any lands in Allegany
