CHAP. 207.

An act for the better regulating the Harbor and Port of
Baltimore.

1841.

WHEREAS, there are millions of feet of sawed lumber
floated in rafts into the port of Baltimore, and there wash-
ed and drawn out of the water, by which large deposites
of mud are made in said harbor, to the injury of the navi-
gation of vessels, as also, adding much to the expense of
cleaning the docks and harbor within the city or port of
Baltimore — therefore,

Preamble.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland
That from and after the passage of this act, the Mayor and
City Council of Baltimore shall have full power and autho-
rity, and they are required to assess, levy and collect, on
every thousand feet of lumber floated into or arriving at
the said port of Baltimore, and washed therein, a sum not
exceeding thirty cents per thousand feet board measure,
and not less than fifteen cents per thousand feet board mea-

sure, excepting however, all timber floated into, or arriv-
ing at the said port, for the purpose of being sawed in said
city or its vicinity, as also all the timber to be used for

timore, to the carrying into effect the rules and regulations
which they may, from time to time, make, respecting the
harbor and port of Baltimore.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Alexander King, Horatio G. Grieves and
Harrison D. Black, be and they are hereby appointed com-
missioners to receive subscriptions to the capital stock of
the Eastern Hotel Company of Cumberland; and they, or
