CHAPTER 197.

An act to provide for the repairs of the Public Roads. of
Calvert County.

SECTION. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the levy court of Calvert county be and
they are hereby authorised and required to levy on the as-
sessable property of Calvert county, whatever sum they
may, in their discretion, think requisite, to carry into effect
the provisions of this act, for preserving, repairing and al-
tering the public roads in said county.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the levy court of Cal-
vert county shall annually appoint one supervisor for every
hundred, as now laid out and known in said county, whose
duty it shall be, whenever requisite, to call upon all per-
sons residing in the hundred of which he is a supervisor,
for hands, horses; ploughs and carts, specifying at least
one week in advance, the day upon which the said hands,
horses, ploughs and carts will be wanting, and the place

where; and each hand, or those persons owning hands, hor-
ses, ploughs or carts, shall be entitled to the following
sums, to wit: for each male above the age of eighteen years
and under fifty, the sum of seventy-live cents per day, for
each male under the age of eighteen years, and for each
female, fifty cents per day, for each two horse plough, one
dollar per day; and for each cart and two yoke of oxen,
one dollar and fifty cents per day.

Compensation

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That no supervisor shall work
upon any road with a less number than four hands, or great-
er number than fifteen; and it shall be the duty of said su-
pervisor to give a certificate for the amount due to each la-
borer who may have been employed by him on said roads,
whenever he shall be required so to do; and it shall be the
duty of said supervisors to make returns semi-annually, un-
der oath, to the said levy court, in writing, the number of
hands employed on each particular day, specifying the sea
and age, if slaves, to whom belonging; and also the number
of horses, ploughs and carts, and to whom belonging; and
the said levy court shall give to each any every person a
certificate of such amount as may appear from the returns
and certificates of the said supervisors to be respectively
due; and the collector of the tax for Calvert county shall
receive said certificates in full or in part pay for county
charges, or shall pay the holder of such certificates as the
cases may be.
