tion and Section 737 if a Magistrate-at-Large sits in his
place during such absence.
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall
take effect June 1, 1949.

AN ACT to approve, confirm and ratify a certain Compact
entered into by the State of Maryland and other South-
ern States by and through their respective Governors on
February 8, 1948, as amended, relating to the develop-
ment and maintenance of regional educational services
and schools in the Southern States in the professional,
technological, scientific, literary and other fields, so
as to provide greater educational advantages and facili-
ties for the citizens in the several States here recited in
such region, and to declare that the State of Maryland is
a party to said Compact, as amended, and that the agree-
ments, covenants and obligations therein are binding
upon said State.
WHEREAS, on the 8th day of February, in the Year of
Our Lord One Thousand Nine Hundred and Forty-eight,
the State of Maryland, and the States of Florida, Georgia,
Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas,
Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Okla-
homa and West Virginia, through and by their respective
Governors, entered into a written Compact relative to the
development and maintenance of regional educational serv-
ices and schools in the Southern States in the professional,
technological, scientific, literary, and other fields, so as
to provide greater educational advantages and facilities
for the citizens of the several States who reside within such
region; and
WHEREAS, the said Compact has been amended in certain
respects, a copy of which Compact as amended is as
follows:
