said Justice, which sum shall not be in excess of twice the
amount of said fine imposed; and the person on whom
such fine is imposed under this section, shall at his option,
instead of furnishing surety for his appearance, have the
right pending his appeal, to deposit with the Justice a
sum in cash double the amount of the fine imposed, as
collateral security for his appearance in the Criminal
Court of Baltimore on said appeal. Provided, no appeal
shall be allowed under this section after payment of the
fine, but deposit of cash, as such collateral security in
double the amount of the fine shall not be construed to be
a payment of the said fine.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall
take effect June 1, 1^49.

CHAPTER 209

(Senate Bill 116)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section
716A of Article 4 of the Code of Public Local Laws of
Maryland and Baltimore City Charter (1938 Edition), title
"Baltimore City", sub-title "People's Court", as said section
was amended by Chapter 17 of the Acts of the Special Ses-
sion of 1948, authorizing the Mayor and City Council of
Baltimore to prescribe the salaries of the Judges of the
People's Court in the Ordinance of Estimates each year.

WHEREAS, it is desirable that the Mayor and City Council
of Baltimore have power to prescribe the compensation of
the officers and employees whose salaries are paid by the
City; now therefore

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 716A of Article 4 of the Code of Public
Local Laws of Maryland and Baltimore City Charter (1938
Edition), title "Baltimore City", sub-title "People's Court",
as said section was amended by Chapter 17 of the Acts of the
Special Session of 1948, be and it is hereby repealed and re-
enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

716A. The Mayor and City Council of Baltimore City
shall have the power to provide in the Ordinance of Esti-
mates each year the salaries to be paid to the Judges of the
