SEC. 3. And be it -further enacted, That should any sec-
tion, sections, or part or parts of a section of this Act be
held invalid for any reason whatever, such holding shall not
be construed as affecting the validity of any remaining sec-
tion or part of a section of this Act, it being the legislative
intent that the remainder of this Act shall stand and would
have been passed notwithstanding such invalidity or elimina-
tion of any portion or portions hereof.
SEC. 4. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect June 1, 1949.

(House Bill 683)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Sub-sec-
tion 1 of Section 97 of Article 77 of the Code of Public
General Laws of Maryland (1939 Edition), title "Public
Education", sub-title "Teachers' Retirement System", re-
lating to the eligibility of Veterans of World War II to
engage in the teaching profession by waiving the benefits
of the Teachers' Retirement System if they are unable to
qualify because of some physical defect.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Sub-section 1 of Section 97 of Article 77 of the
Code of Public General Laws of Maryland (1939 Edition),
title "Public Education", sub-title "Teachers' Retirement
System", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with
amendments, to read as follows:
97.
(1) All persons who shall become teachers after the date
as of which the retirement system is established, except those
specifically excluded under sub-section (3) of this section,
shall become members of the retirement system as a condi-
tion of their employment, but this section shall not apply to
Veterans of World War II who are not eligible to become
members of the Retirement System because of some physical
disability which disqualifies them for membership, and such
veterans who have completed the courses of study required
for teaching and have passed the required examinations
