CHAPTER 741
(House Bill 561)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Sections
12 (b) (3), 13, 22 (a) (2), 25 (b), 34, 49 (c) and 66 of
Article 66 1/2 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1947
Supplement, title "Motor Vehicles", sub-title "Administra-
tion—Registration—Titling", and to repeal and re-enact,
with amendments, Section 107 (c) of said Article, sub-title
"Motor Vehicle Financial Responsibility", providing for
registration of commercial motor vehicles by factory identi-
fication number for such makes of vehicles as are so identi-
fied or by factory serial number for such makes of vehicles
as are so identified until the manufacturers thereof adopt
and use an identification number instead of engine number.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Sections 12 (b) (3), 13, 22 (a) (2), 25 (b), 34,
49 (c) and 66 of Article 66 1/2 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1947 Supplement, title "Motor Vehicles", sub-title "Ad-
ministration—Registration—Titling", be and they are hereby
repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, and that Section
107 (c) of said Article, sub-title "Motor Vehicle Financial
Responsibility", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted,
with amendments, and all to read as follows:

(b)

(3) All private passenger vehicles under the engine num-
ber and in the case of commercial vehicles under the factory
identification number for such makes of vehicles as are so
identified, or under the factory serial number for such makes
of vehicles as are so identified until the manufacturers thereof
adopt and use an identification number.

13. (Examination of Registration Records and Index of
Stolen and Recovered Vehicles. ) The Department upon receiv-
ing application for original registration of a private passenger
vehicle or any certificate of title shall first check the engine
and serial number shown in the application against the
indices of registered motor vehicles and against the index of
stolen and recovered motor vehicles required to be maintained
by this Article.
