repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as
follows:
Sheriff.
342. (a) The Board of County Commissioners of
Carroll County are authorized and directed to levy for
and pay to the sheriff of Carroll County, annually,
in equal monthly payments, the sum of three thousand
dollars, which sum shall be in full for all claims
of said sheriff against Carroll County or said Board of
County Commissioners, for his care, labor, responsibility
and expense in discharging the duties of his office, including
the keeping safe in jail, the prisoners committed to his
custody, the cooking and serving to said prisoners the
provisions furnished for them by said Board of County
Commissioners, as hereinafter provided, the necessary
washing for said prisoners and keeping the jail in a
cleanly condition; and said Board of County Commission-
ers shall not pay said sheriff for any services he may
render in the discharge of his official duties, any further
or other compensation, and shall not be in any way liable
for any other fee or compensation whatever, to said sheriff
than as above provided for the discharge of his official
duties, except as hereinafter provided.
(b) It shall be the duty of the Board of County Commis-
sioners to furnish all supplies and provisions necessary in
its judgment for the support and maintenance of all per-
sons committed to the jail of said county, and all fuel, light
and equipment needed for said jail.
(c) The sheriff shall be paid by said County Commis-
sioners the sum of twenty-one hundred dollars ($2, 100) per
annum, in equal monthly installments, to cover all expenses
of his office, including the traveling expenses of himself
and his chief deputy.
(d) The sheriff is authorized to appoint a chief deputy,
who shall be paid a salary of twelve hundred dollars
($1, 200) per annum, payable in twelve equal installments,
which amount shall be levied and paid by the Board of
County Commissioners of Carroll County.
(e) It shall be the duty of said Board of County Com-
missioners to pay the sheriff his actual expenses, or reason-
able mileage, in transporting any person under indictment
or warrant to or from any place beyond the State. The
County Commissioners may in their discretion pay for
any extraordinary expenses incurred by the sheriff or
deputy sheriff in the performance of their duties on vouch-
ers properly verified.
