High Schools", and to repeal Section 187 of said Article
and to enact in lieu thereof a new section, to be known as
Section 187, and to follow immediately after Section 186 of
said Article as repealed and re-enacted herein, to provide
for State aid to Junior, Junior-Senior and Senior High
Schools or combinations of these, under certain conditions;
and to repeal and re-enact with amendments Section 188 of
said Article.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 186 of Article 77 of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1939 Edition), title "Public Education", sub-title
"Chapter 17. High Schools", be and the same is hereby re-
pealed and re-enacted, with amendments, so as to read as fol-
lows:
186. The county board of education of any county shall
have authority to establish high schools, subject to the approval
of the state superintendent of schools, in their respective
counties, when, in their judgment, it is advisable to do so.
Junior high 'schools, junior-senior high schools, and senior high
schools, or any other combination of grades shall be organized
with the approval of the State Superintendent of Schools
according to rules and regulations of the State Board of
Education for pupils who have completed the six elementary
grades, and as soon as approval is given by the State Super-
intendent of Schools, any such high school so organized shall
become a part of the minimum State school program. All high
schools so established and those now in operation shall be under
the direct control of the several county boards of education, sub-
ject to the provisions of this article; provided that when in-
struction below that of the high school grades is given in the
same building, or on the same premises such grade work may
also be under the direct control of the county board of edu-
cation, and the principal of the high school shall also be prin-
cipal of the elementary school.
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That Section 187 of said
Article be and the same is hereby repealed, -and that a new
section be and it is hereby enacted in lieu thereof, said new
section to be known as Section 187, to follow immediately after
Section 186 of said Article as repealed and re-enacted herein,
and to read as follows:
187. For the encouragement of secondary education in
Maryland, the State shall extend aid to high schools in such
amounts and in such manner as hereinafter designated and
