266 LAWS OF MARYLAND. [CH. 310

VETERANS.

(1) The term "Second World War Veterans, " as and when
used in this Article, unless a contrary intention shall be
manifest by the context, shall mean, be deemed to mean,
and shall apply to any person who, at the time he seeks to
invoke any of the provisions of this Article or at the time
any such provisions become applicable to him, is a resident
of Maryland, and who after May 1, 1940, and prior to the
termination of the hostilities in which the United States
is now engaged:

(a) Has been or shall be inducted into any of the land
or naval forces of the United States, pursuant to the Act
of Congress, known as the Selective Training Service Act
of 1940, as amended, or any subsequent Act or amend-
ments of a similar nature, or,

(b) Who, as a member of any reserve component of the
land or naval forces of the United States, has now been
or may hereafter be on active duty or service, or,
(c) Who has been enlisted in, or been commissioned in,
the armed forces of the United States, or who may here-
after enlist or be commissioned in the armed forces of
the United States, and

Who has either been honorably discharged from the
land or naval forces of the United States, or has received
a certificate of satisfactory completion of training and
service in any of such forces, and

who, at the time of his entry into the armed forces of the
United States, had been a resident of Maryland for the
year immediately preceding, or who, if he had not been
a resident for the year immediately preceding the time of
his entry into the armed forces of the United States, had
resided in the State for at least two of the three years
immediately preceding such time, or who has resided in the
State at least one year immediately preceding the time he
invokes any of the provisions of this Article.

For the purposes of this Article, a person shall be deemed
a resident of the State if he is a duly qualified voter there-
in, provided, however, that the fact that a person is not a
duly qualified voter therein shall not, if by other applicable
standards he is a resident, preclude him from being so
classified.

2. A Second World War Veteran, shall be entitled to all
preferences, benefits, rights and privileges and subject to
all the obligations, liabilities and duties conferred or im-
posed by any of the existing laws of the State of Maryland
passed prior to or at the 1945 Session of the General As-
sembly of Maryland, upon Veterans of the First World
