shall thereupon be entitled to the pay, allowances, duties,
powers and incidents of men of the respective ranks as now
provided by law and regulation, and the Police Commissioners
may designate one Sergeant of the force as Assistant Superin-
tendent of the force, who shall perform the duties and have
the powers incidental to such an office, and shall act as super-
intendent in the absence of the Superintendent.

416B. That the Police Commissioners are hereby authorized,
empowered and directed to appoint during the duration of
the war and six months after its termination, as fixed by the
provisions of Section 10 of Chapter 602 of the Acts of Assem-
bly of Maryland for 1943, such special members of the police
force as may be necessary for the welfare and safety of the
County and its residents during the period of the war and its
aftermath, such members to hold the rank of "Private" in the
police force, to receive the pay provided for that rank, but not
to be eligible nor included in the pension system now pro-
vided for regular members of the force. Such special members
shall be appointed without the examination now required for
members of the regular force, and their terms of office or
employment shall expire at the end of the period herein set out.

416C. All members of the police force, including regular
members and special members as provided by Section 416B,
shall receive a permanent increase in salary equal to fifteen
per cent (15%) of the pay to which they would be entitled
under law at present, and hereafter desk clerks shall receive
the same salary as Privates who have passed their period of
probation. All police officers shall receive an additional f 40. 00
(forty dollars) per annum allowance for uniforms.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect June 1, 1945.

CHAPTER 901.

(House Bill 805)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 184
of Article 10 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland
(1930 Edition), title "Dorchester County", sub-title "Taxes",
as said section was amended by Chapter 828 of the Acts of
1943, increasing the salary of the Assistant Treasurer of
Dorchester County.
