office at the pleasure of the Sheriff and shall be removed by the
Sheriff at any time the Sheriff may elect or by the Circuit
Court for Howard County upon indictment and conviction as
now provided by law. It shall be the duty of the Sheriff to re-
quire said deputies to do and perform at any time in any place
any service incident to the office of deputy sheriff which they, or
either of them, may be by the Sheriff ordered to do and perform.
The County Commissioners of Howard County are hereby au-
thorized and directed to levy and collect annual taxes on the
property assessable for taxation in said County to such amount
as may be necessary for the payment of the salaries and allow-
ances as set forth in this section.
The said deputies so appointed shall devote their full work-
ing time to the discharge of the duties of their offices.
293B. The Sheriff shall collect all fees and charges to which
he may be entitled by law, and exercise all powers conferred
upon him by law to enforce the collection of same, and shall
at the end of each month during his term of office make a
sworn report of the same to the County Commissioners of
Howard County, in. such form as said Commissioners of How-
ard County may direct, and pay over the same to the County
Commissioners of Howard County; whenever any Sheriff shall
retire from office leaving any costs, fees or charges uncollected,
lawfully payable to him, his successor shall collect and pay
over the same.
293C. It shall be the duty of the Sheriff to keep in his office
an official record to be retained there by him, and such book or
books as may be required to show all fees and charges to be col-
lected by him, and those which may have been collected.
293D. Whenever, in the judgment of the Sheriff, it shall be
expedient and necessary for the safety and welfare of the
county for him to appoint temporarily an extra number of
deputy sheriffs, he is hereby authorized to appoint them, and it
shall be the duty of the County Commissioners to allow and
pay such reasonable fee or compensation as in their judgment
they may deem proper for the services rendered by such deputy
sheriffs, but in no case shall such deputy sheriffs continue to
serve longer than the necessity of the case actually warrants.
293E. The County Commissioners of Howard County shall
appoint a warden to the jail, upon the advice and consent of
the Sheriff, and he shall be paid an annual salary by the
County Commissioners of twelve hundred dollars ($1, 200. 00),
payable in monthly installments of one hundred dollars
