their number to serve as directors of the company,
a majority of whom shall be a quorum for the
transaction of business until the time which the
by-laws shall prescribe for, and their election, or
until their successors shall have been chosen; the
said company may, by their by-laws, prescribe the

number of directors to be hereafter chosen; Pro-
vided, however, the number of directors shall not
be less than five.

Proviso.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That nothing herein
contained shall be taken or construed so as to au-
thorise the said company to establish a banking
institution in the State of Maryland, or exercise di-
rectly or indirectly in this State any of the privi-
leges of a bank.

Construction.

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That the State of Mary-
land shall have, and hereby reserves to itself the
power at any time hereafter to repeal or alter this
charter.

CHAPTER 363.

Reservation.

AN" ACT making appropriations for the support
of the Government for the year ending on the
first day of January, eighteen hundred and six-
ty-two.

10, 1860.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That for the expenditure in the sup-
port of the government for the. year ending on the
first day of January, eighteen hundred and sixty-
two, the following sums of money, or so much
thereof as may be necessary, be and the same are
appropriated, that is to say:

STATE OFFICERS.

Appropria-
tions for the
year 1861.

For the salary of the Governor of the State,
three thousand six hundred dollars; for the salary
of the Secretary of State, one thousand dollars; for
the salary of the private secretary of the Governor,
eight hundred dollars; for the salary of the Comp-
troller of the treasury department, two thousand
