CHAP. 9.

certify the same to the said board, with the signa-
ture of the party attached, which certificate shall
be recorded as aforesaid.

Advertise-
ment.

SEC. 16. On the morning of each day of election
in said city, and on the day preceding, if practi-
cable, the judges of each precinct shall give public
notice by advertisement in all the daily papers of
the said city, the proprietors whereof shall be will-
ing, for reasonable compensation, to insert the same,
of the places at which the polls shall be held in
their respective precincts.

Polls to be
open.

SEC, 17. At every election to be held in the city
of Baltimore, the polls shall be open for the recep-
tion of votes from eight o'clock, A. M., until five
o'clock, P. M., and no longer.

Duty of
judges.

SEC. 18. It shall be the duty of the judges of
election in each of the precincts hereinbefore pro-
vided for, so soon as any person shall present him-
self to vote or offer to vote therein, to take from him
the ballot which he shall tender before they shall
examine him or any other person touching his quali-
fications, and before they shall determine in regard

thereto; and the said judges in each precinct, in
addition to the ballot box or boxes to be used for the
reception of votes which they shall receive as legal,
shall provide another box wherein all ballots which
they shall reject shall be separately deposited by
the said judges, each in a sealed or closed envelop,
with the name of the party offering the same en-
dorsed thereon, which said box shall be sealed up
immediately after the said election, and deposited
with the board of police aforesaid until the end of
twelve months next ensuing, when if the said bal-
lots shall not have been or shall not be required for
the purposes of any election contest or judicial in-
vestigation (in which cases they shall be produced
and opened if necessary) they shall be destroyed by
the said board, without being opened.

Drinking es-
tablishments
to be closed.

SEC. 19. It shall be unlawful to keep open in the
said city on any election clay any drinking estab-
lishment or bar-room, or any grog-shop whatsoever,
or to furnish any spirituous or fermented liquor
therein or therefrom, and any person or persons
who shall be guilty of violating this section or of
retailing or dispensing any spirituous or fermented
liquors on any election day in said city, shall, on
conviction thereof, forfeit his or their license, if he
